Area including waste
132 sq ft

Grout lines are ignored, which leaves a small extra margin. Buy from the same batch so the shade matches.

The math behind it: Tile

tiles = area / area of one tile, plus the waste allowance, rounded up

A 10 ft by 12 ft floor is 120 square feet. With 12 inch tiles that is 120 tiles, or 132 with 10% added for waste, which comes to 14 boxes of ten. Larger tiles need fewer pieces but often more waste, because each cut loses more.

Common questions

How many tiles do I need?

Divide the area to be tiled by the area of one tile, then add 10% for cuts and breakages. A 120 square foot floor needs 132 tiles that are 12 inches square.

How much extra tile should I buy?

10% for a straightforward layout, and 15% for diagonal patterns or rooms with lots of corners. Keep a few spares for future repairs.

How many 12x24 tiles do I need for 120 square feet?

Each 12 by 24 inch tile covers 2 square feet, so 60 tiles, or 66 with 10% for waste.
