Download Time Calculator

Enter the file size and your connection speed. The calculator shows the time it will take and compares it with other common speeds.

Type a number and the answer appears straight away.

Your answer

Download time6 min 40 sec

In seconds
400
Speed in megabytes per second
12.5 MB/s
File size in megabits
40,000

Uses decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB) and assumes the full speed is available. Real downloads are often slower because of Wi-Fi, busy servers and other devices on the line.

The math behind it: Download Time

time (seconds) = file size in megabits / speed in Mbps; 1 megabyte = 8 megabits

A 5 GB file is 40,000 megabits, so at 100 Mbps it takes 400 seconds, which is 6 minutes 40 seconds. Internet plans are sold in megabits per second, but file sizes are in megabytes, and there are 8 bits in a byte.

Common questions

How long does it take to download 5 GB?

6 minutes 40 seconds at 100 Mbps, and 26 minutes 40 seconds at 25 Mbps.

How do I calculate download time?

Multiply the file size in megabytes by 8 to get megabits, then divide by your speed in Mbps. The answer is in seconds.

Why is my download slower than my internet speed?

Mbps counts megabits, while download windows show megabytes per second, which is one eighth of the number: 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s. Wi-Fi, busy servers and other devices on the line slow things further.
