Tons are US short tons (2,000 lb). Density varies with the stone and how wet it is, so treat the weight as an estimate.

The math behind it: Gravel

cubic yards = length x width x depth in inches / 12 / 27; tons = cubic yards x weight per cubic yard

An area 20 ft by 10 ft covered 4 inches deep needs 2.47 cubic yards, which is about 3.5 tons of gravel. A cubic yard of gravel weighs about 1.42 tons (2,832 lb), though this varies with the type of stone and how wet it is.

Common questions

How much gravel do I need?

Multiply the length, width and depth, all in feet, and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Then multiply by about 1.4 for tons.

How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?

About 1.4 US tons, or roughly 2,800 pounds. Sand and crushed stone are slightly lighter, and topsoil is lighter still.

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

4 to 6 inches for a new driveway, laid in layers. A path or patio base needs about 4 inches, and a decorative layer about 2.
