Time = distance / speed. A common rule for long drives is a 15-minute break every two hours.
| Average speed | Driving time |
|---|---|
| 45 mph | 6 hr 40 min |
| 55 mph | 5 hr 27 min |
| 60 mph | 5 hr |
| 65 mph | 4 hr 36 min |
| 70 mph | 4 hr 17 min |
| 75 mph | 4 hr |
The math behind it: Travel Time
time = distance / speed
A 300 mile drive at an average of 60 mph takes 5 hours on the road, or 5 hours 30 minutes with half an hour of stops. Your average speed is always lower than your cruising speed once towns, traffic and fuel stops are included.
Common questions
How do I calculate travel time?
Divide the distance by your average speed. 300 miles at 60 mph is 300 / 60 = 5 hours. Then add time for stops.
How long does it take to drive 300 miles?
5 hours at an average of 60 mph, about 5 hours 27 minutes at 55 mph, and 6 hours 40 minutes at 45 mph, before stops.
How often should I stop on a long drive?
A common recommendation is a 15 minute break every two hours. On a 5 hour drive that adds about half an hour.
