The math behind it: Mean, Median, Mode
mean = sum of the values / how many values there are
For the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 and 8, the mean is 16.57, the median is 15 and the mode is 8. The mean is pulled toward unusually large or small values, which is why the median is often the better guide for things like house prices and incomes.
Common questions
How do I find the mean, median and mode?
Mean: add the numbers and divide by how many there are. Median: sort them and take the middle one, or the average of the middle two. Mode: the number that appears most often.
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the arithmetic average and is affected by extreme values. The median is the middle value and is not. For 1, 2, 3, 4 and 100 the mean is 22 and the median is 3.
What if there is no mode?
If every value appears only once, the set has no mode. If two or more values tie for most frequent, it has more than one mode.
