|---|---|
| 15 minutes | 151 |
| 30 minutes | 301 |

The math behind it: Calories Burned
calories = MET x weight (kg) x hours
A MET is a measure of effort: sitting quietly is 1 MET, walking at 3 mph is 3.5 and running at 5 mph is 8.3. A 160 lb (72.6 kg) person running at 5 mph for 30 minutes burns about 8.3 x 72.6 x 0.5 = 301 calories.
The MET values come from the Compendium of Physical Activities. Your real figure varies with fitness, effort and body composition, so use the result as an estimate.
Common questions
How many calories does walking for 30 minutes burn?
At 3 mph, a 160 lb person burns about 127 calories in 30 minutes. Heavier people and faster walkers burn more.
How do I calculate calories burned?
Multiply the MET value of the activity by your weight in kilograms and by the time in hours. Running at 6 mph (9.8 METs) for an hour at 72.6 kg is 9.8 x 72.6 x 1 = 711 calories.
Which exercise burns the most calories?
Of the common activities here, running at 8 mph and jumping rope are highest at 11.8 METs. The exercise that burns the most for you, though, is one you can keep doing for long enough.
